- In astronomy, a syzygy (/'sized3i' s12-e-jee, from Ancient Greek ou(uyia(suzugia) 'union, yoking', expressing the sense of oúv (syn- "together") andÇuy- (zug- "a yoke"yf1ll2l) is a roughly straight-line configuration of three or morecelestial bodies in a gravitational system.
The word is often used in reference to the Sun, Earth, and either the Moon or aplanet, where the latter is in conjunction or opposition, Solar and lunar eclipsesoccur at times of syzygy, as do transits and occultations
